Chapter Twenty-Three

Tucking the blankets around Jack, Julie sat on the edge of his bed and pressed a kiss to his forehead. His arms unexpectedly snaked around her neck and hugged her hard. Chuckling, Julie leaned back and looked into his brown eyes.

“What was that for?”

“I had a great day. Thank you.”

She suspected his enjoyment from the day came courtesy of a certain ex-soldier rather than herself, but she smiled all the same and smoothed her palm over his hair. He looked exhausted but there was a freshness in his tired eyes that twinkled in the lamplight. Like his fatigue stemmed from living life to its fullest and having the freedom to enjoy it.

He and Magnus had chased animals down at the creek for most of the day. By the time they emerged from the wilderness, both were filthy. She’d asked Magnus if they’d left any mud where it should be, to which he let out a belly laugh and high-fived her son.

“I’m glad.” She pressed her nose to Jack’s. “Just remember to not go off without telling me.”

He sighed and rolled his eyes. “Okay.”

“Do you want me to read you a story?”

He shook his head. “I’m too tired.”

“Okay.” She fussed with the edge of the blankets, folding them over neatly. “You have school tomorrow, so you need to rest.”

“Will he be back?”

She blinked at his question. “You mean Magnus?”

Jack hummed a yes, his eyelids drooping closed. “He promised to teach me how to track wallabies.”

“Maybe next weekend, okay?”

Outside, thunder rolled around them. Low in intensity, it hovered overhead, foreshadowing some much needed rain. Rising from her son’s bed, Julie crossed to the window and pulled the curtains closed. If lightning did flash, she didn’t want it to wake Jack. Returning to his bedside, she listened to his breathing settle into a deep rhythm and turned off the bedside lamp. She backtracked through the darkened room and pulled his door closed most of the way, leaving it open an inch.

In the kitchen, Magnus stood at the sink, watching the gathering storm through the window. She studied his strong back, her gaze dipping to the rounded curves of his ass, before lifting to those wide shoulders. Hearing him confess that he had tried to kill others tested her resolve to trust him but she couldn’t ignore the man she’d seen develop over the last few days. Whether it was the knock over the head, the coma, or being confronted with his own mortality, he wasn’t the same man she’d met last June.

Instinct more than facts convinced her he’d changed. She wondered if it would be different if she weren’t so drawn to him. Did the physical attraction blind her to the reality of the situation? Did a cold-hearted killer really stand in her kitchen? She had to accept the possibility he could be playing her. No doubt. If she’d learned anything from her time with Mark, it was that she could be fooled.

At the same time, it was because of her history with Mark that she looked harder, noticed more and asked the hard questions.
